Popular Gold Buyers

If you have never sold gold before it can be a confusing process for first-timers. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of gold buyers out there that are more than willing to take your unwanted gold bracelets, necklaces, chains, coins, and any other scrap gold that you may have. The problem is that there are many that take advantage of these new people to the field. Many have no idea what their gold is actually worth.  This leads to many companies only offering a fraction of what their gold is really worth.  Some are worse than others but some of the worst offenders are actually the ones that are advertising the most. This is why we say time and time again on this site that you should always research gold refiners and dealers thoroughly before making any kind of decision.

We get asked a lot here at  How To Sell Gold For Cash what gold refiners we recommend. That is understandable as it is hard to weed out the con artists and ripoffs from the legitimate businesses.  So to get you started we have compiled a list of the most popular gold buyers and gold refiners that still process gold today.  The following gold refiners are in no particular order:

Midwest refineries

gold buyersMidwest refineries is a BBB accredited gold refiner that has been in business since 1939.  They will buy scrap gold, silver, and platinum with no minimum amount required.  They also offer no charges or hidden fees for the refining process and they claim to pay up to 95% of the current price of gold, 90% of the current price of silver, and 90% of the current price of platinum.  Their expected turnaround time is three to five days.  They have a very good reputation and come highly recommended.

Empire Gold Buyers

Empire Gold buyers was founded in 1996 and has been a BBB accredited business since November 2008.  They have a BBB rating of an A+ with no complaints.  They pay around 96% of the current gold price according to the chars on their site.  They have a free overnight insured FedEx shipping envelope with which to send in your gold.

US Gold Buyers

This company was founded in July 2001 and they’re located in New York, NY.  They offer a gold kit like many of the gold refiners which is insured with free shipping.  They buy all kinds of gold, platinum, Palladium, and silver.  They have a very good buying rate at 96% of the spot gold price with 5 ounces or more.  It works on a sliding scale under 5 ounces.  You can choose several different payments from a Western Union Money transfer, money gram, check, PayPal, and even bank wire for over $2500 in sales.  The only thing to watch out for with them is that they will only insure your package for one third of the value of the content or $100 whichever is less.

Cash4Gold

This is the main company that you see advertising on TV all the time offering to buy your gold for a big lump sum of cash. Right now they are supposedly offering 20% more cash for your gold. They were founded late 2001 and have a BBB rating of only a C which is pretty bad. There are also many not so good reports about this company – all you need to do is a quick search in Google for cash4gold scam.  I’ll let you do the research on your own and make your own decision.

Gold Kit

This gold refiner has been in business for almost 20 years.  They have a BBB rating of an A but at the time of this writing their accreditation had expired.  They buy all types of scrap gold, silver, platinum at their three different websites.  Like almost all of these gold refiners they have a gold recycling pack that you can use to send in your scrap gold.  The turnaround time is around seven days.  They also have a limited liability claim similar to US Gold buyers of one third of your gold value or $100 whichever is less.

Goldfellow

This relatively new company claims to have one of the highest payouts of any gold refiner.  Gold Fellow offers an insured and free shipping gold kit where you can send in your scrap gold through the mail. They claim that 99% of their offers are excepted the very first time.  They have no complaints against them at the BBB website and have a A- rating but they have only been in business since 2007 so I would be extra cautious and do your research.  Good news is that they insure their packages for $500.

Gold Buyers International

A Christian owned and operated gold refinery, Gold Buyers International pays cash for any and all scrap gold like gold rings, bracelets, chains, necklaces, fillings, etc. and platinum items.  They have no minimum amount to be accepted – you can sell however much, or little, you want to them.  They do not have on their site how much they pay out, but if memory serves it is around 90%.

Get Gold Cash

GetGoldCash is a company that has been BBB accredited since early 2008 and have a rating of a B+.  Although the website was only officially started in 2006, Craig R. Nusinov, who runs GetGoldCash, is a 4th generation gold buyer and jeweler who runs Nusinov Jewelry which was founded in 1923.  Their system is very similar to most other scrap gold buyers and they insure their packages for $500.  If your gold is worth more than that and you can arrange for them to set up prepaid FedEx shipping and the insurance costs is covered by the company.

Other Gold buyers worth mentioning

Since there are so many different buyers of gold out there, is impossible to cover them all here.  But here are some more gold refiners and dealers that you might think about using:

  • Dollars 4 Gold / My Gold Envelope
  • My gold party
  • Green For Gold
  • Express Gold Cash

It is up to you, of course, to do your own research but hopefully this gives you a jumping off point. Always be wary of any company that isn’t BBB accredited. You can check for companies at BBB company reviews.

If you are a gold buyer that we have skipped and would like to be included, please let us know via email or comment.

I prefer to remain anonymous.
Thank you for your clear and intelligible information. I’ve never sold any of my gold jewelry. However, since your info was so expressive, succinct, and comprehensible, I realize that there are some items I will market.
i.e. I no longer smoke, so my gold cigarette holder is available, an adorable gold \pinky\ ring which I receivrd
as a young child, a large, gold barette which I wore when my hair was long, etc.
You’ve helped me recall some happy memories.
Thanks to you, I’ll be digging into my old jewelry and reflecting, remembering. I’m 80 years old.
Au revoir.

Au revoir.

Hi I have a question. I just sold some jewelry that had both stones in it and gold. After reading all of this I believe I was ripped off. Is there anything I can do to get my jewelrey back?

It depends on who you sold your jewelry to but if it was a refiner and you accepted money from them, then more than likely it’s already gone.
